A passion of mine is protecting the environment. I strongly believe that we have a responsibility to protect nature and our environment. A balance must be kept in order for the world to survive. One of the best stories of the importance of an ecological balance is the story of the reintroduction of the grey wolf in Yellowstone Park. January 2015 marked the 20th anniversary of the reintroduction of the grey wolf in Yellowstone Park.
The grey wolf had been killed off by park rangers in the 1920s. This created a trophic cascade. A trophic cascade occurs when the top predator in an ecosystem is removed. The result is changes in the predator and prey throughout the food chain.
In Yellowstone Park, the result was that the deer population exploded. The deer in turn ate the grass causing huge barren areas in the park. This in turn caused changes in other wildlife.
The reintroduction of the grey wolf in 1995 reversed the trophic cascade in Yellowstone. You can read the amazing results in this story – There Were Too Many Deer In The Forest. So They Unleashed The Wolves Without Any Idea What Would Happen..
This is one reason why I love A New Hope for a New Wild – The Nature Conservancy. We are all linked to this earth. The protection of delicate ecological systems throughout the world is the prime protection for humankind.
